ten scattered thoughts on being a mom of 2

1. Saying "kids" takes some getting used to. Kind of like "husband" sounded like such a funny word seven years ago.

2. I'm alternating between complete panic and utter calm. Surely I'll find a middle ground sometime soon. Both little ones are sleeping right now. Can you guess my current state? :)

3. I forgot how many books I read when Sarah was a nursing newborn. I just finished Home to Harmony this morning after starting it two (middle of the) nights ago. I need to spend some time on Good Reads to restock my book collection. At this rate I'll be reading three books a week!

4. The thoughtfulness of people leaves me feeling two ways: 1) incredibly grateful 2) guilty that I'm not always as thoughtful as I should be (strike that and replace with this: guilty that I don't always act on the thoughtful thoughts that I think)

5. Here are some examples. Christi stopped by yesterday with lunch (Chick-fil-A!!!) and dinner (yummy chicken and rice casserole), a gift for Ephraim, and a bag full of emergency food for Sarah (individual mac n' cheeses, applesauce, and a frozen kids meal - how brilliant is that?!). Mandy loaded all three of her kiddos up to visit us in the hospital and even brought Sarah a big sister shirt exactly like Ansley's. In Sarah's book anything exactly like Ansley's is something to be cherished above all else. Plus, she just spent the entire morning over here with us on Brent's first (almost) full-day back at work. Elisa from our high school youth group showed up unexpectedly at the hospital with matching big sis/little bro onesies and a gift certificate to Dinner by Design. This is the same girl who sent a beautiful, yummy gift basket over when we moved into Huntsville. (insert guilty-that-I-don't-always-act-on-the-thoughtful-thoughts-that-I-think thought again here). Amy came through HUGE with cookies two days ago! Amy cookes are absolutely divine so the package could have just ended there but the fact that it also came with other goodies, stickers for Sarah, and sticky notes explaining why each thing was included made it undeniably Amy and absolutely perfect. And all of this isn't even mentioning the other friends, family and neighbors who are keeping us fed and keeping our mailman busy with packages on the porch. Thank God for thoughtful people.

6. Hyperlinks are back in full effect. Maybe I'm feeling more like myself than I thought. :)

7. Ephraim is an incessant hiccuper.

8. Sarah is an amazing big sister. She's got just the right level of interest versus independence. This week, that is. :)

9. Brent has left me even more in awe of him as a daddy and husband. I hope we can do half as good a job raising Ephraim as his parents did raising him. (thanks MIL and FIL)

10. Baby's stirring...here are a couple of photos...

Sounds like you are a well adjusted second time mother......I think moms in general are always somewhere between panic and calm...probably more towards panic! Wonderful to hear Sarah is loving her new job as a big sister. The friendships between siblings is a beautiful thing. Enjoy. Amy T.

That's funny about the hiccups. Jacob was one during the first few months too. I would guess you are feeling just right for a new mom of two being somewhere in between "complete panic and utter calm". That's a really great way to put it!

Okay Cobb family...the last five posts have left me with tears in my eyes. Is this a sign that it is time to add a second child to my family?

Nursing a newborn while tethering a two year old will get easier-- I am here to prove it!You sound as though you are more than managing though. Congrats on another beautiful baby. Try to get some rest.

Erin, you HAVE amazing and thoughtful friends because you ARE an amazing and thoughtful friend!! And I witnessed a bit of that calm when viewing Sarah's butterfly video while Ephraim fussed. You seemed unfazed - which is a good thing.

Just wanted to take the time to say a hearty and heartfelt congratulations on a healthy you and a healthy Ephraim! And if the transition from one to two doesn't kill you, I have a child or two I could send your way and you can move from two to three or four just to see how that works out. what? no? fine. whatever. I'll keep them. For now. But I owe you a lens and if it comes to you in a really big box, I want you to NOT be suspicious and open it anyway, no matter how much noise is coming from inside.

oh i love it...alla was a big hiccuper too. i love all the pics and cannot wait to see and hear more about this new adventure for you. i read a LOT when alla was a newborn, too, but somehow i thought that wouldn't happen with the next one cause i'd be doing stuff with alla WHILE nursing...are you really doing all your reading in the middle of the night!??!

thank goodness for friends and family! i now have 4 weeks, unless we go sooner, and i'm scared to death. i'll be chasing a crazy 17 month old and trying to nurse a newborn. i've had several friends tell me they don't think it is possible, but i'm going to prove them wrong....hopefully!
again...ephraim is a cutie pie!

Congratulations, Mommy of two -- he is just beautiful!!!

Charlie is a major hiccupper too --and there is just nothing you can do about it!! I took him to church at 3 weeks old and his hiccups reverberated so loudly in the sanctuary! I was so embarrassed but everyone loved hearing him!

Erin,
When you do find a middle ground/ coping mechanisms - which I'm sure you will! - please share them! =) I have a 2yo. boy and I'm expecting another boy (aack!) in February, so I'll need mother-of-two tips! But onto the most important thing, your new little one is so precious!

If you are loving Phillip Gulley books, have you also read Jan Karons Mitford Series? I find them very similar, and love them all....you might also like Thomas Kinkades Capelight series. Sorry, I am just another of your faithful though nameless blog followers, just wanted to give you some suggested reading for your middle of the night reading/nursing sessions.....but wow, I barely opened my eyes to nurse mine in the night....mine are 16 months,4 years and 8 years.....you have so much to look forward to, and I have to say that I admire the way you are recording all your little moments...congrats on your beautiful addition to your little family!

you're ambitious! I slept while A nursed at night, if I could. By the way, the nursery is perfect now that he's in it :)

My goodness, what a precious boy he is and Sarah is in love! They will, indeed, be such good friends.
I am very happy for you! Just wish this "Gramma" could be there to hold him and Sarah.

Hey! A little late to the party here, but I just wanted to say that your mac and cheese recipe is awesome. (Made it the other day, but added some grated parm we had around for the salt instead of adding the salt. YUM).

I DID want to add that I grew up on my mom's super special mac n cheese which is even easier than this... use a can of cream of mushroom soup (our Whole Foods even carries organic version of this). Heat. Add cheese until melted. Mix with cooked pasta and serve.

My kids won't eat it though, because of the mushroom pieces in it. For a while I had them convinced they were "Super Power Pills!!! YAY!!!" but one day someone mentioned the mushroom bits in their hearing and that was the end of that.

Anyway, if you were feeling ESPECIALLY lazy and didn't want to make the cream base, I just wanted to mention that the soup works just as well. With one can, we could have mac n cheese for dinner and then leftovers for lunch the next day.

And ALSO - ooops! I added that to the WRONG POST. haha. Cracking myself up. I meant to add it to the Mama Monday Lunch post. But I'm sure you've figured that out right away.
